Cyanobacteria are also called Blue-Green Algae because they contain chlorophyll-a and perform photosynthesis like plants. However, unlike true algae, they are prokaryotic organisms (bacteria) and lack a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. They are important for nitrogen fixation and are found in aquatic and terrestrial environments.
